The Republican-led House met briefly Thursday and then recessed as Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) struggled to secure the majority of votes needed to be elected speaker by the full chamber. House Republicans are meeting behind closed doors Thursday afternoon to talk about the situation. On Wednesday, Scalise narrowly topped Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) in a conference-wide vote, winning the majority by 113-99, with nearly a dozen Republicans voting present or for someone else — a significant number since Scalise can lose only four votes on the House floor.
